Industry Applications

We are really excited to announce the range of applications for the RVDSAFE Technologies.

Information Technology

Generator

A generator is an ideal application for the RVD as it allows its full potential to be realised when used as an unbonded generator. The RVD enables detection of the ‘non-dangerous 1st fault condition’, if either L1 or L2 should develop a fault to frame the RVD creates an imbalance across the RCD, causing isolation. This reduces the risk of a person becoming part of the electrical circuit and exposed to an electric shock.

An RVD protected generator enables multiple pieces of class 1 hand-tools/equipment to be used from a sole power source. Monitoring the frame for a voltage rise, the RVD complements the RCD operation. This allows for a high convenience factor to be realised as no earth staking or other preparatory work is required, resulting in a ‘plug and play’ outcome.

UPS Installations

When mains power is lost from a UPS supported installation, the earthing circuit is lost and so is the ability of the RCD to provide electrical protection. The RVD when installed together with the RCD, provides a complementary electrical protection system against an electrical fault condition occurring. Thus providing a ‘layer of electrical protection’ which is otherwise not present. If the RVD were not present in this situation and an electrical fault were to develop, the risk of a person becoming hurt is high.

UPS installations are often overlooked from a personal protection perspective when the mains supply is lost, however when an RVD is also installed, the electrical safety risk is mitigated.

Power Inverters

An RVD protected Power Inverter represents the safest and most convenient power source for tackling those difficult and problematic jobs that come up from time to time. The RVD protected power inverter provides an additional layer of protection against either L1 or L2 going to frame.

The inverters are manufactured with electrical separation between the LLV(DC) and LV (AC) sides of the inverter so that there is no possibility of the LLV (DC) side becoming live to 240V. Suitable sized inverters are even capable of operating Caddy Welders and providing an ideal solution for those small welding jobs.

Vehicle / RV

Vehicle

The RVD when combined with the RCD/RCBO in vehicular situations, where shore power is used one moment and inverter or generator power the next, represents an ideal solution to a problematic electrical safety situation. Providing an additional layer of protection where earthing/neutral integrity may be compromised or where an earthed environment no longer exists, electrical compromises no longer have to be made.

The simple addition of the RVD to switchboard mitigates the electrical safety risk which otherwise exists and raises the bar from a personal safety perspective.

Lighting Plants

Lighting Plants

The inclusion of the RVD in Lighting Plant provides a simple solution to safeguarding electrical safety from the unit with detection of the ‘non dangerous 1st fault’ condition should a fault condition be detected from a voltage rise on the frame. In a situation where an active conductor comes into contact with the frame, the RVD will detect the condition and create an imbalance across the RCD thus causing isolation.

With this configuration, power outlets can be protected again with protection against the ‘non dangerous 1st fault’ condition, allowing multiple class 1 pieces of equipment to be used with the highest degree of electrical safety.

Wet Environments

Wet Environments

Wet areas are among the most difficult in which to provide a high level of electrical protection. RVDSAFE recommends the use of an unearthed IT environment with an isolation transformer to achieve the highest possible levels of electrical protection. The RVD provides detection of the ‘non dangerous 1st fault’ condition and enables the bird on the wire concept to be a reality with the person no longer part of the electrical circuit and no longer at risk.

If an IT earthing system is not a possibility then the RVD will still provide an additional layer of electrical protection, thus mitigating the safety risk to personnel in compromised earth/neutral situations.

Domestic

Domestic

Few individuals verify the integrity of their earthing system and with burnt off neutrals from the supply authorities being the biggest cause of electric shock in Australia, family safety can be heightened significantly with the ‘additional layer of electrical protection’ offered by the RVD. The safeguarding of our loved ones should be an absolute and these risks can be mitigated by theRVD.

Many overlook the impedance that is contributed to an earthing system by the ground itself and these impedance levels can easily and very often do get to a level where the performance of the RCD can be compromised. Some RCD manufacturers now state that the impedance should be below 1666?, in order for the RCBO to function correctly, but this figure is easily exceeded depending on the soil type encountered. The RVD overcomes any such problems by complementing the RCD performance and ensuring that electrical safety is at the highest level that it can be.

Transportable Buildings

Transportable Buildings

Electrical safety for portable building is often difficult given their temporary nature and the electrical environments that they are often installed within. Their construction represents another problem not easily overcome with conventional protective devices. Where possible the use of an unearthed IT earthing represents by far the safest option with the RVD detecting any voltage leakage fault condition to frame, causing isolation of the ‘non dangerous 1st fault’ condition.

Where installed in a conventional earthed environment, the RVD provides an additional layer of protection safeguarding against a compromised earth/neutral situation. The RVD protects against a touch potential rise and step potential issues to a much lower level of 8mA where otherwise an RCD’s performance may be compromised due to earthing impedance issues.

Construction

The benefits of an unearthed/IT earthing environment can be fully experienced for the first time and taken to a whole new level when protected by the RVD. Detection of the ‘non dangerous 1st fault condition’ enables changes in work practices where personnel are no longer part of the electrical circuit and hence not at risk. New benchmarks can now be realised without the need for an earth path and enabling the ‘bird on the wire’ concept to become a reality.

Detection of a voltage leakage to frame will see isolation occurring very quickly. The use of the IT earthing system together with the RVD will result in a dramatic reduction of earth related electric shocks and tingles in excess of 90%. Why would you not explore the possibilities!

Welders

Welders

Many large welder units are combined with a generator to enable operation without mains power. The provision of electrical protection against a fault to welder frame unit is problematic for RCD’s given that the units are often truck mounted and earthing is difficult.

The RVD provides protection against a voltage rise on the frame, ensuring a much safer outcome. The ideal configuration is the Generator as an unbonded type, which enables the RVD to detect a voltage leakage from either L1 or L2 to the frame and create isolation if at a dangerous level without the requirement for an earth stake. This means no requirement for a ‘Dig’ permit and a ‘plug and play’ capability. Electrical safety is significantly enhanced, reducing the risk of harm and deployment efficiency enhanced all thanks to the RVD.
